BRIEF HISTORY OF MITCHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY AND UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA, ENUGU STATE – NIGERIA

In 1960, Michigan State University (MSU) helped establish the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), one of Nigeria’s first universities and precisely, the first indigenous university in the country. The project was interrupted by the Nigerian/Biafran War. But the connections made there were not forgotten. Decades later, MSU is building on those connections through a variety of new projects.

In 2016, Michigan State University (MSU) through the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources executed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) through the Faculty of Agriculture.  The MOU captures several themes including research collaboration and an exchange of scholars’ program. Following up on the MOU, the Vice Chancellor, UNN, Professor Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba with several faculty members visited MSU on September 17 – 22, 2017.
