Visit of the Nigerian Coordinator of Nigerian Women in Agricultural Research for Development (NIWARD) to the Faculty of Agriculture, UNN, on 25th – 26th October, 2015
The Nigerian Coordinator of Nigerian Women in Agricultural Research for Development (NIWARD) with the UNN Mentors made a courtesy call to the Vice Chancellor on the 26th of October 2016. The purpose of the visit was to familiarize the Vice-Chancellor with the AWARD fellowship and fellows and to request for his support in hosting the 4th AGM of the NIWARD in 2016. NIWARD meeting brings together all the Nigerian AWARD fellows, mentors and mentees along with other stakeholders like representatives from Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria to deliberate on how to improve Agriculture for national development.
An awareness-making event was also held at the Faculty of Agriculture Lecture Hall the same day and the Vice- Chancellor was present to grace the event. The AWARD/NIWARD Coordinator, Professor Stella Williams, gave a presentation on (Thema’s Journey). The Chairman, Professor Benjamin Ozumba, Vice-Chancellor, University of Nigeria gave the opening remarks while the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Professor Ngozi Nnam, presented a welcome address.
A talk on benefits of AWARD was presented by Dr Chinyere Okebalama (AWARD Fellow).
Dr. Ebele Amaechina (AWARD Fellow) coordinated the filling of AWARD Application forms and there was room for discussions. It was an educative and interesting seminar. The 4th AGM of NIWARD will be hosted by University of Nigeria, early next year.

Faculty Lecture Series
The faculty lecture series has remained a very important part of the faculty academic activities and a fertile ground for kick starting research dissemination, nurturing research collaboration and cross-fertilization of research ideas. It is also an avenue for stakeholder participation in research development and implementation and hence community/national development. The theme of the lecture is ‘Enhancing food and nutrition security in the country’
The general objective of the lecture series is to enhance food and nutrition security in Nigeria. Specifically, the lecture aims to:
(a) re-ignite the passion for quality research in all areas of agriculture among staff and students
(b) engender trans-disciplinary research collaboration among staff and students of the faculty
(c) engender stakeholder participation in agricultural research and development
(d) present an annual publication of the lecture series.
2015 Activities so far
Under the current Dean, Professor Ngozi Nnam, the series was kick-started on the 11th of February, 2015 by a Guest Lecturer in the person of the Dean of Social Sciences, Professor Ignatius Madu. Professor Madu talked on the “Place of Geography in Agricultural Research.” Since then, we have had Professor Agwu of Agricultural Extension talk on “Strengthening Agricultural Extension and Advisory Services: Challenges and Changing Paradigms”; Dr. (Mrs) Uche Onyechi of Home Science, Nutrition and Dietetics, on “Indigenous Foods and their Potential for Combating non-communicable diseases”, which was sponsored by Nestle Plc. On the 10th of November, 2015, Dr. C.U. Agbo of Crop Science, presented on ‘Ex-situ Conservation and heterosis breeding of plants – tools for crop conservation, improvement and utilization”
The next lecture will be presented by Dr. Anselm Onyimonyi of Animal Science Department. Dr. Onyimonyi will be talking on “Animal rights and their implication for human health”
